Sanyuan expands duck production

Beijing's Sanyuan Group is building a Peking duck complex northeast of the city.

Beijing Sanyuan Group has kicked off construction of a Peking duck complex in Chengde, 225 km northeast of Beijing. The complex will have an annual processing capacity of 10 million Peking ducks once completed in 2007. Sanyuan has an existing subsidiary that produces about 5 million Peking ducks a year.

Peking ducks are main materials for the whole Beijing Roast Duck, a traditional and popular dish in the capital of China. Sanyuan Group is the largest agriculture and food integrator in Beijing. It owns more than 30 state farms and specialized companies covering livestock, fruit and vegetables, in addition to another 41 joint ventures with overseas investors including McDonald's, Hormel and Starbucks.

In July 2006, Sanyuan opened its Chengde-based subsidiary that covers dairy farming, pig breeding, as well as the Peking duck complex, with total investment of CNY 780 million (USD 100 million).
