China has always given priority to the development of the urban public transport. Urban mass transit or UMT with the advantages in high efficiency, low energy consumption and environment protection has rapidly become the principal means to develop the public transport in major cities in the country. During the 10th Five-year Plan period (2001-2005), China's total investment in UMT construction reached CNY200 billion and about 550 kilometers (km) of urban rail line in total was built. During the 11th Five-year Plan period (2006-2010), China will also invest CNY200 billion in UMT constructions to make the total mileage of subway and light track in Chinese metropolis exceed 1,500 km in 2010. According to statistics, China plans to build 65 urban rail lines with a total length of 1,700 km through pouring a huge sum of CNY600 billion into UMT construction through 2015, In light with its near term UMT development layout.
