From electric power production in China in 2006, power generation arrived at 2.834 trillion kWh, up by 13.5% year-on-year, in which, hydropower generation stood at 416.7 billion kwh, a share of 14.70% or so in total power generation and a rise of 5.1% year-on-year; Thermal power generation amounted to 2, 357.3 billion kwh, approximately taking 83.17% of total power generation and increasing by 15.3% year-on-year; and nuclear power generation reached 54.3 billion kwh, a share of about 1.92% in total power generation and a year-on-year growth of 2.4%. Regionally, provinces with power generation increasing by over 20% year-on-year in 2006 mainly included Inner Mongolia (33%), Qinghai (25.6%), Guizhou (23.6%), Yunnan (23.4%), Zhejiang (20.8%) and Jiangsu (20.2%).

In 2006, the social power consumption was up to 2, 824.8 billion kWh, a year-on-year growth of 14.0% compared to the year of 2005. Of all, electric consumption in the primary industry stood at 83.2 billion kWh, up by 9.9% year-on-year; that in the secondary industry 2, 135.4 billion kWh, a year-on-year rise of 14.3%, in which, power consumption in light industry and heavy industry reached 413.3 billion kWh and 1, 702.1 billion kWh respectively with a growth of 11.9% and 15.4% year-on-year; and that in the tertiary industry arrived at 282.2 billion kWh, up by 11.8% year-on-year. Besides, power consumption of rural and urban residents was 324 billion kWh, a rise of 14.7% compared to the preceding year.

Comparison of Five Largest Power Generation Groups by Installed Capacity and Power Generating Volume as of 2006

In Q1 2007, the newly added electric power sets had a yield of 13.1282 million kW, of which hydropower sets was 0.3226 million kW, taking 2.46%; thermal power sets 12.5943 million kW, a share of 95.93%. The problem of too fast growth of thermal power installed capacity is still obvious.

In Q1 2007, social power consumption was up to 718.912 billion kWh, a rise of 14.92% year-on-year. Of all, the power consumption in the primary industry was up to 15.121 billion kWh, up by 3.5%; the power consumption in the secondary industry reached 547.008 billion kWh, up by 16.86% compared to the same period of last year; and the power consumption in the tertiary industry stood at 73.38 billion kWh, a rise of 10.77% year-on-year. Last, the power consumption of rural and urban households arrived at 83.403 billion kWh, increasing by 8.85% compared to the same period of the preceding year.

According to prediction, the national demand of electric power will grow 10.9% in 2007, and power consumption will amount to 3, 108.9 billion kWh. It is expected that newly installed capacity of over 80 million kW are to be added in 2007 and national power installed capacity will approach 700 million kW by the end of 2007. In general, power supply and demand in China is balanced, some regions have surplus supply. Northeast China, North China, East China, Northwest China and South China could realize power supply and demand balance, Central China has surplus supply, and some regions in Anhui, Henan, Jiangsu and Inner Mongolia have much surplus installed capacity.

The 11th Five-Year Plan period (2006-2010) will see a new tide of power grid construction. By 2010, regarding cross-region power grid construction, the State Grid will build alternating current ultra-high voltage transmission lines 4, 200 kilometers, capacity of power transformation 39 million kVA, and trans-region power transmission ability 70 million kW. As for rural and urban power grid construction, 220 kV-and-above alternating current and direct current transmission lines will have a total length of 340,000 kilometers, and the capacity of alternating current transformation will be over 1.3 billion kVA.

The report gives a detailed study of 53 listed companies in China electric power industry with regard to their overall comparison, business performance, operation and investments, etc. What's more, their main business composition and latest market developments are also elaborated in the report.
