Although ESP (Electronic Stability Program) is also called DSC by BMW, VSC by Toyota and Lexus and DSTC by Volvo, yet, the principle and function are basically the same. ESP can help the vehicle to reduce the danger from sideslip so as to reduce the accidents as well as the huge losses caused by bad road conditions and errors from drivers. NHTSA reported that among the vehicles equipped with ESP, coach crashes decreased by 30%, passenger car crashes also decreased by 30%, especially SUV crashes dropped by 67%.

According to Bosch, in 2005, new cars equipped with ESP accounted for 72% in Germany, 44% in Western Europe, 21% in North America, 15% in Japan and only 3% in China.
