As the important power transmission & distribution equipment, high voltage switch is significant for electric power industry. According to the "Eleventh Five-Year Plan", by 2010, the increased installed capacity in electric power industry is expected to reach 250 million KW, the investment in power generation and grid will reach RMB 1 trillion and RMB 750 billion respectively. In recent several years, as the country is trying every effort to reconstruct power grid and carrying through major construction programs, such as "power transmission from west to east", China high voltage switch industry has developed well.

Caused by the strong demand in Asia-pacific electric power market, the global supply of power transmission & distribution equipments was positively affected. As one of the fastest growing markets, China has become the world’s 2nd largest market. Moreover, Chinese electric power industry is now guiding the advancement of international high voltage switch market in a way.
At present, the high voltage switch is mainly produced by several European giants (Siemens, ABB, Slsthom, and Schneicler) and Japanese firms (Mitsubishi, Toshiba and Hitachi). And their products almost represent the world level.
There are now over 3,000 high voltage switch manufacturers in China, of which about 200 are pillars. Most of them focus on the products below 110 KV. Only some 20 manufacturers could produce equipments above 110 KV; and only 3 manufacturers can manage the production of equipments between 330KV-500KV.

In early 2005, SGCC set a goal of constructing "national backbone grid of UHV power transmission composed by million-voltage AC and 0.8 million-voltage DC". It is imperative to develop UHV, which is regarded as a historic leap in China power industry, and this will change the Chinese grid structure completely. UHV brings golden opportunities as well as severe challenges for China high voltage switch industry. Even for EHV, China market is mainly shared by foreign enterprises or joint ventures. For example, the bid winners of both 550KV GIS project and 800KV GIS demonstration project are foreign companies. The prices of 550KV GIS and 800KV GIS are high; yet, the price will fall sharply if domestic manufacturers are capable of producing those.
To summarize, domestic grid construction has huge market potentials, however, domestic high voltage switch products and technologies are still immature. Therefore, on one hand, domestic manufacturers need strengthen independent R & D; on the other hand, they could introduce advanced technologies, equipments and processes through joint ventures. Besides, along with the shifting of the global manufacturing, China becomes very attractive for foreign high voltage switch manufacturers.
500 KV and above UHV DC power transmission & transformation equipments manufacture (limited to joint fund and cooperation) has been listed into 2006 foreign investment encouragement catalog. In contrast, in 1997 catalog, 200 KV and above large transformer like high voltage switch, mutual-inductor, and cable equipment were not open to foreign investment.
