The global power generation capacity saw a rapid growth, and China was an uppermost driving force. The global power generation capacity will reach 4.5 billion KW by the year of 2010, a net increase of 1.1 billion KW compared to the end of 2000, among which 45% of the newly-increased installed capacity will distribute in Asia, and China will be the most important growth source with an estimated capacity growth of 350 million KW during the 11th Five-Year Plan period.
The macro control policies implemented in the year of 2004 still have effects. As a result, the industry structure has changed obviously and the growth speed of power demand has been slowed down. Considered the supply & demand situation of 2005, national power supply is still in shortage, though the tight situation has been obviously alleviated compared to 2004 and, this phenomenon also continued in the year of 2006. On the other hand, new sets were constantly put into operation and the power generation capacity witnessed a rapid growth during this period.
China Power Generation Equipment Output and Newly-increased Installed Capacity, 1990-2008
The investment in China's domestic power grid lags far behind, so there will be a long-term rising tendency in the future. During the past decades, the idea of “preference of power generation over power supply” is clearly existed in China's power industry, which resulted in seriously lacking devotion in power grid construction. The ratio of accumulated investment in power grid to the total investment is about 30%, far behind the level of 50% plus in developed countries. The development of power grid seriously lags behind that of the power generation, especially in recent years, along with the accelerating construction and put-into-operation of power generation, the contradiction is becoming more apparent. In the forthcoming 10 to 20 years, the continuous increase of investment in power supply field will become an inevitable trend as for the further development of China's power industry.
It is the important for domestic major electrical power equipment manufacturers to exploit the overseas market. Due to the constant increase of power equipment export, domestic enterprises gradually possessed the ability to compete with international counterparts in addition to keeping the low-cost advantage. At present, China's power equipments have been exported to over 30 countries and regions including the major target markets in Southeast Asia, Africa and Mid-east etc, and the international competitive advantages of China's electrical power equipment industry have arisen.
To sum up, China's power transmission & transformation equipment market is more prosperous than that of the power generation equipment. Ultra-high voltage and DC are the theme of power transmission and transformation equipment, energy conservation and environmental protection are the development trend of electricity market, and wind power is the major development trend of renewable energy equipment market in the near future.
