The sales volume of the three major American enterprises of pharmaceutical wholesales accounts for more than 90% of the domestic market shares. The sales volume of the five major Japanese pharmaceutical wholesale enterprises accounts for 80% of the domestic market shares and the three major European pharmaceutical wholesale enterprises account for 65% of the region's shares. Meanwhile, the three major wholesalers in China, China National Pharmaceutical Group, Shanghai Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd and Jointown Group Co., Ltd, only accounted for 23% of the domestic market shares in 2005 even after nearly two years of rapid development.
According to the industrial statistics, currently there are 16.5 thousand pharmaceutical wholesale enterprises nationwide. Only 10 of them have a sales volume exceeding 1 billion Yuan. Only 3 to 6 of them each have a sales volume of more than 5 billion. There are nearly 140 thousand retail businesses and the annual turnover of the largest chain store is only 500 million Yuan. There are a total of 120 thousand retail pharmaceutical stores and more than 6.3 thousand pharmaceutical manufacturing enterprises. China National Pharmaceutical Group, Shanghai Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd and Jointown Group Co., Ltd, which have the largest sales volume, only account for 3% to 5% or so of the pharmaceutical market total sales volume respectively. However America's top 3 pharmaceutical retailers' sales volume has accounted for more than 95% of the entire pharmaceutical markets', in which McKesson ranked first and Cardinal Health ranked second, their market share being over 30% each. Under this circumstance, a new round of mergers and restructuring waves can easily happen if large amounts of external investment enter. Some enterprises who can't meet the competition will be eliminated while some large enterprises will gradually achieve regional monopoly and earn high profits. Pharmaceutical logistics industry develops from a general and traditional one to a large-scale and modern one.
In order to raise the level of Chinese pharmaceutical distribution industry, in the Ten Five-Year Plan for the pharmaceutical industry, the state proposed to bring up 5-10 specially big pharmaceutical distribution enterprise groups which target domestic and foreign markets, operate diversely and have a sales volume of more than 5 billion Yuan each; and to establish 40 or so big pharmaceutical distribution enterprise groups which target domestic market or domestic regional markets, with a sales volume of more than 2 billion Yuan each. Sales volume of these enterprises reaches over 70% of total pharmaceutical industry sales. The state also proposed to establish 10 pharmaceutical retail chain enterprises famous at home and abroad, which have more than 1,000 branch stores each and to establish a batch of regional pharmaceutical retail chain enterprises, which have 100 or so branch stores each; to achieve a strong alliance among manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers or among wholesalers, reduce logistics costs and enhance logistics efficiency and service levels, through integrated development.
