Currently, Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) programs are being broadcast or trially broadcast in nearly 30 countries and regions. Every day, totally 330 million people are receiving over 600 DAB programs around the world.
Europe is the earliest application region of DAB as well as the fast growing region of DAB. Britain, France, Germany, etc main European countries had begun the operation of DAB before 2000, and created outstanding DAB sales performance. Britain is the most typical market, in 2004, its sales of DAB receivers surpassed 1 million units, up 170% more compared to 2003, which enabled Britain to be the first country with annual sales of DAB receivers exceeding one million units. In 2005, the sales of Britain increased to 3 million units. Besides, DAB sales surge also spread to other European countries, including Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Belgium, etc. In 2004, the sales of DAB in these countries all increased over 400% over the year of 2003. Currently, at least 80% of DAB receivers are manufactured in China.
DAB not only occupies few bandwidth resources, but also makes audio broadcasting available with the sound quality of CD. With the official issuance of "30MHz-3000MHz Terrestrial Digital Audio Broadcasting System Technical Standard" by the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television on May 18th 2006, European DAB standard became China's digital broadcasting industry standard. Digital multimedia broadcasting (DMB) and data information service are being gradually developed based on DAB. Currently, China radio, film, and television bureaus choose DAB mobile multimedia broadcasting standard as the industry standard so as to boost the digitalization of audio broadcasting, the promotion of multimedia broadcasting and localized data information service.
Presently, the officially approved trial sites of mobile digital multimedia business include Beijing, Shanghai, Guangdong, etc, which have begun operation successively. Beijing Radio also has started to broadcast digital broadcasting programs since Nov. 1st 2006.
China mobile digital multimedia broadcasting TV market scale is expected to reach RMB 2.3 billion in 2008, and RMB 5.9 billion in 2010.
There are 60 more types of DAB digital broadcasting receiving terminal in China, including MP4, PMP, GPS navigation device, USB receiver, etc.
