Inner Mongolia-based Mengniu Dairy Co Ltd has invested 45 million yuan (US$5.7 million) to build the world's largest cow-dung methane power plant in China.

The facility, located in the Mengniu's home market Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region in northern China, would provide 10 million kilowatt-hours of electricity to the nation power grid, the company said.

This would be the first time for a Chinese dairy company took advantage of harmful gas to produce electricity on a large scale.

The plant deals with the dung, urine and wastes from 10,000 cows in Mengniu's farm.

Equipped with equipment and technology from Germany, the facility is able to produce 12,000 cubic meters of methane and generate 30,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity daily.
