SHANGHAI Electric Power Co, the supplier of a third of the city's electricity, posted a loss in the first quarter because of higher fuel costs and government controls on electricity prices.

The loss was 126 million yuan (US$18 million), or 0.0707 yuan a share, versus a profit of 109 million yuan, or 0.068 yuan a share, a year earlier, the utility said in a statement.
