Taobao.com, China's largest online retail portal released a report Sunday on online shopping cities during 2009 to 2010. The top 10 cities mostly come from East China, led by Shanghai, International Finance News reported Monday.
Shanghai tops the list as its online spending hit 17.42 billion yuan, and Beijing follows with 11.25 billion yuan. Next on the list are Shenzhen, Hangzhou, Guangzhou, Nanjing, Suzhou, Tianjin, Wenzhou and Ningbo, according to the report.
"The cities are mainly located in the Yangtze River Delta area, Pearl River Delta area and Beijing and Tianjin area," executives with Taobao said.
Another figure in the report indicates the growing power of the midwest regions. Eight out of 10 cities come from midwest regions in terms of the fastest-growing cities with online spending power, the newspaper reported.
According to the report, male online buyers reached 53.5 percent, 7 percentage points higher than female buyers. Women's clothing topped the best sellers.
