The Suzhou, China plant of Powertech Technology (PTI) has reportedly landed NAND flash backend orders for solid-state drives (SSD) from a Japan-based customer, most likely Toshiba, with shipments to kick off in June-July, according to industry sources.
Toshiba has been PTI's long-term client, mainly outsourcing production of its NAND flash chips and microSD cards, the sources indicated.
In response, PTI chairman DK Tsai declined to comment citing customer confidentiality.
Tsai revealed that about 20% of total capacity at the Suzhou plant is reserved for Spansion orders. The facility also fulfills backend orders for chips used in SSD and USB drives, mainly working closely with PTI's customers for the local market, Tsai said.
PTI in August 2009 announced its takeover of the Suzhou plant from Spansion, in a move to expand its business in China
In addition, PTI's recently-acquired factory building located in Hsinchu, Taiwan will start offering SiP (system-in-package) services for logic ICs in June, according to Tsai. The Hsinchu factory is also expected to kick off volume production for through silicon via (TSV) products at the end of 2011 at the earliest, said Tsai.
