Drought Ravaging China's Agriculture

   Date:2006/12/31

China is reeling under a massive drought affecting more than 250 million acres of farmland.

The country's State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters said scorching summer weather and dry conditions had withered crops on tens of millions of acres and threatened as many as 15 million livestock.

Agency spokesman Tian Yitang said conditions are the worst in 50 years in Chongqing and neighboring Sichuan province. Water levels in most rivers are low, and even southern parts of China, normally rainy and humid in summer, are also in drought conditions, Tian said.

Nationally, he said as many as 30 million citizens are pressed into service to tap ground water and transport water tanks.
