A batch of 3G-capable slate personal computer, including iPad and device with Google systems, is expected to debut in the Chinese market next year. Some of them even support phone functions, Shanghai Daily learned from a telecommunications forum held by Qualcomm Inc today.

Meanwhile, 3G smart phones cost less than 1,000 yuan (US$149) will come into volume production next year, which will boost the 3G penetration rate in China, the world's biggest mobile phone market, said Qualcomm, the world's No. 1 telecommunications chip designer.

"China will become the top region world with 3G penetration rate growth, thanks to not only 3G phones but pads," said Wang Xiang, Qualcomm China's president.

Wang's opinion was echoed by device makers, from Huawei Technologies, ZTE, Lenovo Mobile to ViewSonic, which displayed slate PCs and phones in the Qualcomm China Partner Forum held yesterday in Beijing.

ViewSonic showcase a 7-inch slate PC with Google's Android system, which allows users to make phone calls directly through the device on WCDMA (sideband code division multiple access) network. The ViewSonic device, which will debut next year, also supports traditional pad functions from Internet browsing, picture viewing to game.

Lenovo's pad device will be available in the market "within a month," according to the country's No. 1 PC maker.
