Yunnan becomes world flower garden

   Date:2006/12/31

Flower industry has developed on a relatively large scale in Yunnan, which is gradually becoming a world flower center.

During the first half of the year, flowers produced in Yunnan had been sold at a high price. Experts said that this was because economic cooperative organizations had developed fast among flower growers, and some key flower enterprises had played a leading role in the industry. Flower growers’ planting skills had improved and the number of good, fresh-cut flowers increased substantially. The overall competitive edge of the flower industry in Yunnan had risen, so the price of flowers had gone up accordingly.

Statistics show that in 2006, some 250,000 mu of land in Yunnan were allocated for growing flowers, producing 1.9 billion fresh-cut flowers, 7% more than last year. The flower industry generated 740 million yuan of income for flower growers, up 23% from last year. Flower industry has proved to be a profitable industry in Yunnan.

Flowers produced in Yunnan are not only sold to Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, the market has further been expanded to some medium-sized cities in the middle and lower valleys of the Yangtze River, and in the Pearl River delta region. Traditionally, flowers in Yunnan were exported to Hong Kong and Japan. Now they are sold in 35 countries and regions including the United States, Australia, France, Germany, and the Netherlands, the world’s largest flower-producing country.

Information from the Kunming International Flower Auction Center shows that since the beginning of this year, 320,000 flowers have been sold every day on average, 101% more than last year, and the turnover increased by 130%. The amount of auction taking place during the first half of this year exceeded the whole amount last year. Large international flower enterprises, such as Anthura Company in the Netherlands, went to Yunnan for investment. In the first half of this year, the amount of foreign investment for flower industry in Yunnan was twice the total amount of investment last year.
