Karamay Oil Field is planning to discover 100 million tons of oil and 60 billion cubic meters of natural gas every year in the next five years, thus it will be able to increase its annual oil output to 20 million tons equivalent of oil by 2010 to become the biggest oil field in western China.

Being the first oil field found in China, more than 237 million tons of petroleum and 36 billion cubic meters of natural gas have been produced in Karamay in the past 50 years. Petrochemical industry there has also made great achievements, with a capacity of processing more than 10 million tons of petroleum every year into products of more than 200 different kinds.

Though having been developed for over half a century, Kararmay still has bright prospects. In the last five years, more than 300 million tons of oil reserve and 29 million cubic meters of natural gas reserve have been found. Its annual oil output has kept growing for 25 years. Karamay reached the goal of becoming the first 10-million-ton-level oil field in western China way back in 2002.

Scientists found that Karamay's potential might be beyond the wildest imagination. It is estimated there is an over-two-trillion-cubic-meter natural gas reserve, although only 3.5% has been discovered so far.
