China bans misleading TV, radio ads on health products

   Date:2006/12/31

China has banned all television and radio commercials, and shopping programmes promoting medical or health products.

There are "experts" endorsing the product and there are "satisfied customers" who have seen miraculous results.

Yet few people are convinced by the claims of health products advertised on China's shopping channel.

With consumerism reaching new heights, China's State Administration of Radio, Film and Television and the State Administration of Industry and Commerce have decided to put a stop to such misleading and exaggerated commercials on television and radio.

An official said: "It's good that these advertisements are banned as they mislead consumers. The feedback has been quite negative, because they tend to come across as rather deceptive."

There are some 400 tele-shopping companies in China advertising medical or health products.

With advertising rates of more than US$600 a minute, it is not going to be easy to remove them.

The shopping programmes contribute as much as 50 percent of the revenue of some Chinese TV stations.

Even though the ban took effect in August, some television stations are still screening such commercials.

According to the Chinese authorities, if television or radio stations violate the ban three times within two months, they will be banned from showing any commercials for a period of time.
