From Rover to Roewe for SAIC

   Date:2006/12/31

Shanghai Automotive Industrial Corp, which lost the bid to buy the Rover brand to Ford nearly a month ago, will probably name its first self-branded model as Roewe.

SAIC Motor Manufacturing Co Ltd, the subsidiary of SAIC as well as the major unit for making cars with SAIC's own technology, will also christen the new model, dubbed 750E.

The 750E sedan is expected to be SAIC's first self-owned model, developed on the Rover 75 model following the Chinese firm's purchase of intellectual property rights from the failed British carmaker last year, the company said earlier.

The model will be unveiled at the Beijing Auto show, which runs from November 17 to 28.

SAIC, the nation's second largest carmaker, also registered several Chinese brands including Lu Shen, Lu Kun and Lu Sheng last December in addition to the Long series.

The Chinese partner of General Motors Corp and Volkswagen AG has been eying to take over the Rover brand from BMW AG as it may help the Chinese automaker easier entry into international markets.

The company signed a deal with BMW last month to buy the Rover brand. But it was forced to scrap the plan on September 20 after Ford exercised its preemptive right to buy the nameplate six years after it bought the Land Rover from BMW.

SAIC's first-branded model will heat up the fierce competition in the domestic mid-to-high car segment.
