Printers face hurdles to find success in China

   Date:2006/12/31

China's rapid growth presents opportunities in the book publishing industry, but foreign companies trying to expand in the Asian country face significant hurdles.

The printing industry in China is attractive to Quebec companies because domestic demand will remain strong for decades and the foreign presence in the sector is still very small compared with other industries.

However, China still has deep roots in the economy, a legacy of more than 50 years of Communist rule, and the printing industry also faces tough government scrutiny.

Printed products are the country's primary method of disseminating information, and the government is not ready to transfer control to a private corporation, and even less so to a foreign one.
