The State Council Information Office has briefed the media on the construction process of the Zhongyuan Economic Zone. Speaking were the Vice Minister of the National Development and Reform Commission, Du Ying, and the Governor of Henan Province, Guo Gengmao.

The Zhongyuan Economic Zone covers Shanxi, Henan, Hebei and Shandong provinces. Officials say the aim of constructing such a zone is to promote the development of the central area of China, and to explore a new way of sustainable industrialization and urbanization. Strategic, fundamental and binding guidelines for the utilization of the country’s territory have been taken into account.

The area is expected to grow into a base for key high-tech industry, advanced manufacturing, modern service sector, energy and raw materials. It will also become a center for transportation, logistics and regional technological innovation. The new economic zone is to roughly take shape by 2015, come into its own as a prosperous, environmentally-friendly region by 2020.
