Macao's electricity consumption up 18 pct in Q3

Macao's electricity consumption reached 1.198 billion kWh in the third quarter of 2011, an increase of 18 percent over the previous quarter, according to figures released Tuesday by the city's Statistics and Census Service (DSEC).

Of the electricity consumption in the third quarter, that by households surged by 34.9 percent quarter-to-quarter to 269 million kWh, and that by the business sector increased by 13.4 percent to 873 million kWh, the figures indicated.

Local generation of electricity reached 255 million kWh in the period, up 12.3 percent quarter-to-quarter, while the imports of electricity increased by 22.7 percent to 1.021 billion kWh.

For the first three quarters of 2011, imports and consumption of electricity reached 2.330 billion kWh and 2.949 billion kWh, increasing by 6.7 percent and 4.7 percent respectively year-on-year, according to the DSEC.

The figures also indicated that consumption of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) in the third quarter decreased by 19.2 percent quarter-to-quarter to 8,731 tonnes, of which consumption by households (2,371 tonnes) and the business sector (6,183 tonnes) fell by 21 percent and 19.7 percent respectively.

For the first three quarters of 2011, imports of LPG increased by 9.1 percent year-on-year to 32,028 tonnes, according to the figures.
