China unveils new poverty relief plan

   Date:2011/12/07

The Chinese government has unveiled details of poverty relief plans for the next decade. The Information Office of China’s State Council has held a press conference, to set out the latest poverty alleviation plan.

From 2011 to 2020, China’s anti-poverty drive will focus on the country’s underdeveloped regions. The government will also focus on facilitating self-development of impoverished regions.

Last week, the central government raised the country’s rural poverty line by more than 80 percent, as part of efforts to increase aid to its struggling low-income population. The poverty line was lifted to 2,300 yuan in annual net income per capita, or around 360 U.S. dollars, up from 1, 274 yuan. Last year, there were officially 27 million rural poor in China.

Under the new guideline, that figure has swelled to over 100 million. As China battles high inflation, with all-important food prices recording double-digit growth, more and more low-income earners are struggling to make ends meet.
