   Date:2006/12/31

Seafood consumption in China is expected to grow 44 percent by 2020 amid increased domestic purchasing power. And domestic consumption per year is expected to grow to 36 kilograms per capita, rising from 25 kilograms in 2004.

Seafood consumption in China has maintained a 25 percent annual growth since 1998.

Glitnir, which is a niche bank in the areas of seafood, sustainable energy and shipping, opened its first Chinese office in Shanghai. It plans to use its specialized skills to help China's growing seafood industry and is also a financial partner in a geothermal project in Xianyang.

Fish consumption in China is higher in coastal provinces and areas with high disposable incomes - the country's five regions spending the most on seafood are Fujian, Zhejiang, Hainan, Guangdong and Shanghai. Richer people in coastal areas eat more expensive marine fish, while freshwater fish is consumed throughout the country.
