Sanjiu Medical and Pharmaceutical Ltd., one of China's largest Traditional Chinese Medicine manufacturers, said it will invest RMB 266 million ($33.25 million) to establish an R & D and production base.

Following completion of the project, Sanjiu will be able to produce 22,000 boxes of Sanjiu Weitai capsules to treat gastric esophageal reflux disease, 28,000 boxes of cold and flu Gan Mao Ling capsules, and 200,000 tubes of Pi Yan Ping ointment to treat dermatological conditions.

The project was approved in 2002, but preparation only started in November last year mainly due to the delays associated with the financial risks of the largest shareholder, according to the company.

The company said that the establishment of the production base would enhance the R & D capability of the company and aid the increase of its market share. The 110,000 sq. meter production base will be set up in Shenzhen Guanlan Hightech District and include technology and exhibition centers, a manufacturing  center, a hazardous materials warehouse, and a wastewater treatment station.

Within the technology center, there will be a mid-test production area, laboratories, and a quality inspection center. The manufacturing center will consist of five workshops for preparations, ointments, pills, granules and TCM granules, and will also serve as a logistics center for the company.

The project will be completed at the end of June next year and operations will start in December 2007, according to the company.
