Mega-watt solar power project planned for city

   Date:2007/01/19

Shanghai will build China's first commercial mega-watt solar-powered electricity program around next March to bring electricity from Chongming Island into the city's power network.

Four types of solar batteries will be placed in 13 constructions in Qianwei Village in Chongming.

One of the new varieties of solar batteries comes from Japan and is 4 percent more efficient than existing solar batteries. Another battery, developed by Shanghai, will also be used as glass tiles on the top of one of the buildings.

Shanghai has good solar energy potential with a total of 2,000 hours of sunlight available annually. The current price of solar-backed power is 7 yuan (90 US cents) a kilowatt hour, 10 times that of conventional electricity.

Experts said the price will be reduced with the development of home-grown solar batteries.
