French film industry on long march to conquer China

   Date:2007/01/19
The French film industry is setting its sights on China this year to build up sales, the head of the country's overseas promotion board Unifrance said.

Europe remained France's top market for film, accounting for 48.5 percent of all foreign sales, the largest buyers being Germany, Spain and Italy, followed by the United States, with 25 percent.

But in China, a recent zero-buyer, 10 French films last year sold three million tickets, Menegoz said. "We've gone from nothing to three million in just three years," she added. Unlike most foreign filmgoers, who largely turn up their noses at French comedy movies -- a favorite on the home front -- in favor of art-house "auteur" films, Chinese and Russian filmgoers are hot for France's romantic comedy genre, she said.

So in 2007, Unifrance will organize French film events in Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing and Chengdu.
