Intel work with automakers in Taiwan, China and Korea

Intel will work with automakers in China and Korea, with cars being equipped with Celeron M processors expected to hit the market soon, according to industry sources.

Intel will work with seven automakers in China, and two in Korea. Potential partners include makers of Toyota, Mitsubishi, Ford, Mazda, Nissan and Hyundai vehicles for the domestic market. Apart from Celeron M, Intel will also work to incorporate Yonah (Core) and Merom (Core 2 Duo) processors into car electronics later.

Of the two major car-electronics systems – infotainment and under-the-hood applications – Intel will first focus on developing infotainment systems, including GPS devices, reverse radars, car-use PCs, and audio-visual devices, the sources noted. Intel in the meantime has no plans to enter the mission-critical under-the-hood and powering systems because the company lacks experience and the technological demand is higher.

The application of x86 embedded systems in car electronics is expected to impact the single-chip market, because the system has a much longer history of development, more R&D resources, and more related software solutions. In terms of clock speed, x86 processors can reach over 1GHz and can be much faster than single chips in handling audio-visual applications.
