Cranes headed to Taipei

   Date:2007/01/25
Shanghai Zhenhua Port Machinery Co signed a US$100 million order to sell 27 container cranes to Taipei port in a landmark deal over the weekend. Under the contract, Zhenhua will provide all the container cranes needed for the first phase of the Taipei Port Container Terminal, whose first two berths are scheduled to begin operation at the end of next year.

The contract is the biggest deal yet between Zhenhua, which has produced 70 percent of the world's container cranes, and the Taipei port. In the past, the machinery maker sold only one or two container cranes each year to Taiwan because of the lack of strong business ties between companies on either side of the Taiwan Strait, Zhenhua said.

Taipei Port Container Terminal Corp, operator of the Taipei facility, said the entire project will comprise seven berths and will be finished by the end of 2014. Production at Shanghai Zhenhua Port Machinery is expected to grow 50 percent this year to US$2.25 billion. The spurt in production will be led by the latest quayside container cranes.
