The total length of highways in Beijing has reached 20,503 kilometers, or an average of 125 km for every 100 sq km, according to the city's highway administration authorities.

The Chinese capital now has more than 1,100 km of national highways linking it to other cities such as Zhuhai, Shenzhen, Shenyang, Harbin, Guangzhou and Kunming, statistics with the Beijing Municipal Highway Administration show.

The city has more than 13,000 km of highways linking its rural towns and villages in the suburbs, the administration said.

By 2010, expressways will link all the key towns in the countryside on the outskirts of the capital, according to the city's highway development plan. All administrative villages in Beijing had asphalt roads by the end of 2005. Prior to the early 1980s, Beijing had only 6,500 km of highways.
