BAIC Motor Corp. aims to form a partnership with Daimler AG to produce commercial vans, according to a Chinese media report.
To do so, the Chinese automaker is negotiating to acquire Fujian Motor Industry Group Co.'s stake in a joint venture with Daimler, reports Sohu.com, a Beijing-based website.
Fujian Benz was established in 2007 in the east China city of Fuzhou as a 50-50 joint venture between Fujian Motor and Daimler Vans Hong Kong.
That partnership produces the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, Vito and Viano vans.
Fujian Motor and BAIC have yet to reach an agreement, reported Sohu.com, citing BAIC corporate sources. If the negotiations succeed, BAIC will expand its partnership with Daimler in China.
BAIC runs a partnership with Daimler that builds the Mercedes C-class and E-class sedans and the GLA and GLC crossovers.
BAIC's commercial truck subsidiary, Beiqi Foton Motor Co., also has a truck joint venture with Daimler.
