Crossover, SUV surge propels April sales up 6.5%

   Date:2016/05/12
China's light-vehicle deliveries topped 1.78 million vehicles last month, an increase of 6.5 percent from the same month last year, according to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers.

The growth was powered by sustained strong demand for crossovers and SUVs. Approximately 609,300 crossovers and SUVs were sold in April, surging 32 percent year on year.

Deliveries of multi-purpose vehicles rose 7.5 percent to 179,500 vehicles.

April's results were in line with analysts' sales projections for the full year, easing fears that the auto sector might stagnate as the nation's economy struggled.

China's car buyers continued their migration from sedans and microvans to crossovers, SUVs and MPVs, according to the association's data.

Sedan sales declined 2.9 percent to 905,400 vehicles, while microvan deliveries slumped nearly 22 percent to 85,000 vehicles.

For the first four months, China's light-vehicle sales increased 6.7 percent year on year to 7.45 million vehicles.
