PSA to develop 5 EVs, plug-in hybrids for China

   Date:2016/05/17
PSA Peugeot Citroen and its Chinese partner will introduce five electric cars and plug-in hybrid models in China over the next five years to help meet tougher fuel economy standards.

Dongfeng Peugeot Citroen Automobile Co. also will upgrade its 1.2-, 1.6- and 1.8-liter turbocharged engines and introduce a 1.0-liter turbo engine before 2019. And the partnership will introduce a dual-clutch transmission, an eight-speed automatic transmission and a six-speed manual gearbox.

The company is a 50-50 joint venture between PSA and Dongfeng Motor Corp.

The first green vehicle, an electric version of the Citroen Elysee compact car, will hit enter showrooms next year. The plug-in hybrid Elysee will arrive in 2019.

The company did not disclose information about the other three green models that it plans to introduce.

Dongfeng Peugeot says it will introduce 34 new and upgraded models -- including the five green models -- in China over the next five years.

The government is requiring automakers to cut their fleet fuel consumption to 5.0 liters per 100 kilometers by 2020, down from 6.9 liters in 2015.

That would be equivalent to improving fleet fuel economy to 47 mpg from 34 mpg.

Dongfeng Peugeot builds vehicles for the Citroen and Peugeot brands in the central China city of Wuhan. PSA's other Chinese joint venture, Changan PSA Automobile, produces the DS lineup in the south China city of Shenzhen.
