Data released by the General Administration of Customs shows that China imported 4.7 million tons of coal in January, up 81 percent. Coal exportation fell 20.4 percent in January to 3.29 million tons. China has become a net coal importer for the first time.
The data shows that coal imports from Indonesia are growing fastest. In January, China imported 1.16 million tons coal from Indonesia, six times more than last year. Coal is imported mainly by southeast China, and is generally of good quality. Although the quantity is not large, it is high-end market quality.
