China's ability to refine oil has continued to expand and it now produces the second largest amount in the world.

At the 2007 China Oil Trade Summit (COTS 2007) held on March 25, Bai Xuesong, a senior engineer with China National Petroleum and Chemical Planning Institute, said that at the end of 2006, China's primary processing capacity had increased by 6.3 percent, bringing output to approximately 350 million tons, the second highest in the world.

The output of refined oil hit 307 million tons, and the output of the 4 key finished oils (gas, diesel oil, coal oil and navigation oil) reached 188 million tons. Demand and supply was in basic balance.

Based on the existing refining facilities in China, between 2010 and 2012 China's refining capacity will increase by 100 million tons, with newly built facilities mainly located in eastern, southern and southwestern areas.

Bai Xuesong said that this will help to solve the issue of imbalanced regional demand and improve the production and distribution of finished oil.
