New life for old search engine

   Date:2007/04/10
YAHOO China, operated by China's largest e-commerce firm Alibaba.com Corp, has relaunched a once-popular search engine brand that it abandoned two years ago to compete with rival Baidu and Google in the Chinese market.

Yisou.com, whose domain was directed to Yahoo China's site since its restructuring in 2005, is now working on its own site, which will have a simple layout rather than Yahoo China's portal-like front page.

Yahoo China launched yisou.com in mid 2004, the first and only independent brand of Yahoo Inc around the world. Though it gained great popularity among Chinese netizens and was considered likely to catch up with market leader Baidu.com, the site was closed after Alibaba took over Yahoo China's operations in 2005.

Since then, Yahoo China has been losing market share to rival Baidu and Google. Yahoo China's share fell to less than six percent last year. Yahoo China officials said the new site will test new technologies for Yahoo China, and the fruits will be used in Yahoo China, without saying whether they will use a two-brand strategy in the search market.
