A glittering display at the Shanghai Auto Show

   Date:2007/04/27

Foreign automakers keen to boost their sales in the booming China market and Chinese companies hungry to expand abroad have lined up a glittering display at the Shanghai Auto Show that opened here Sunday.

Automakers are showing off a range of luxury sedans, SUVs and sports cars. The sexiest exhibits include:

-- Ferrari FXX, the most expensive. With an estimated price of between 12 million and 30 million yuan, the stunning FXX sports car is the most advanced model made by the Italian carmaker and the most expensive vehicle ever sold. Michael Schumacher, the seven-time Formula One champion, became the 30th owner of the supercar at the end of last year.

-- Skoda Voiturette, the oldest. The Voiturette debuted at the Prague auto show in 1905. As one of the first Voiturettes to roll out the production line in 1906, it had to undergo a major overhaul before going on display in Shanghai. It belongs to the Skoda auto museum in the Czech Republic.

-- Lincoln 140 stretch limo, the longest. The Lincoln 140 stretch limousine, 8.861 meters long, is on show outdoors and allows the audience to sit in it to take a closer look at the inside -- though not for a drive.

-- Jinbei (Golden Cup) MPV, the ambulance. The five-meter long MPV developed by Huachen Auto Group is used as an ambulance, with a blue-and-red siren on top.

-- Changfeng Liebao (Liebromotor), the dirtiest. This red sports utility vehicle (SUV) is manufactured by Changfeng, one of the biggest SUV makers in China. It's still muddy after a crosscountry race on the ice and snow in Mohe, China's northernmmost county, last month.

Changfeng Liebao ranked fifth among domestic SUV manufacturers in terms of sales in the first quarter of this year, after Great Wall, Chery, Hyundai Tucson and Dong Feng-Honda.
