A CONSORTIUM led by Alstom SA, a global leader in power generation and railway infrastructure, has won a contract worth 120 million euros (US$164 million) to supply subway trains in east China, the French company said yesterday.

The contract, awarded by mass-transit operators in Nanjing over the weekend, is for 144 coaches. The capital city of Jiangsu Province is now building a second Metro.

The consortium comprises Alstom Transport; its Chinese partner, Nanjing Puzhen Rolling Stock Works; and SATEE, an Alstom Transport joint-venture in Shanghai that specializes in traction equipment.

Alstom, which is responsible for the design, traction system, auxiliary electrical power supply, train controls, monitoring system and technical services of its trains, has a 30 million euro share in the contract.

Delivery of the first train is scheduled for December 2008, as the city plans to have eight trains operating on its new line beginning in November 2009.

The order came a month after Alstom signed two contracts with China worth more than 350 million euros for freight locomotives.
