   Date:2007/05/17

WENHUI-XINMIN United Press Group, Shanghai Daily's parent company, today launched a news service via over 1,000 electronic display boards at local bus stations.

The official Website of the group (News365.com.cn) will update about 20 news headlines for the display boards three times (7:15am, 11am and 4pm) each day.

The rolling news coverage service is tailor-made for bus commuters and is expected to cover 10,000 electronic bulletin boards at bus stations in the future, said Zhou Yongchuang, director of the information center of the group.

The Website will also introduce a digital multimedia edition of the Xinmin Evening News, a 78-year-old Chinese newspaper under the group, on Friday. Empowered by simulation software for human voice, the edition will make all the news published in the newspaper audible, besides other features such as pictures, videos, in exactly same format as the newspaper.

A similar multimedia edition of the Wenhui Daily, another major daily newspaper under the group, was launched by the Website on December 18, 2006.

Launched on May 18, 2004, News365.com.cn now has 32 channels and has users from nearly 100 countries. It ranks No. 13-15 among the Websites of the Chinese-language media across the world, according to data from Alexa.com, which provides information on the Web traffic to other Websites.

It tops the official Websites of the three local media groups (Wenhui-Xinmin United Press Group, Jiefang Daily Group and Shanghai Media Group) in terms of visits, said Zhou.

The Website started last year to offer Chinese short message services for users of China Mobile, and later offered English SMS services for the users of China Unicom in cooperation with Shanghai Daily, to tap the booming interactive media market.

It also lists buzzwords in China monthly and has published three books on the buzzwords.
