Recently the foundation stone laying and construction initiation ceremony for the project of Japanese Encephalitis Live Attenuated Vaccine was held in Chengdu. It is hoped Chengdu Institute of Biological Products will be the first Chinese vaccine enterprise passing the authentication of World Health Organization (WHO). The investment value of the project is 180 million Yuan, expected to finish in a year. During that time, PATH (Program for Appropriate Technology in Health) should supply technical support to pass through the preliminary authentication of WHO.
This vaccine is the first Chinese vaccine that wins foreign approval, exported to overseas in large scale, owning independent intellectual property right. It is developed by National Institute for the Control of Pharmaceutical and Biological Products (NICPBP) and Chengdu Institute of Biological Products, and it is the first vaccine of the class in the world. From marketing in China in 1998, the vaccine have been used for about 200 million children. Because the advantages of good efficacy and safety, slight adverse reactions, low price, small number of inoculation, the vaccine is confirmed as the model for the research & developmnet of Japanese Encephalitis Vaccine by WHO.
