The Ministry of Health is raising China's food safety standards. So far, it's formulated more than 400 regulations, covering all aspects of ingredients and additives. At the same time, though, the government is joining other countries in building an international standard.

According to the Ministry of Health, China has set up a food safety monitoring network covering fifteen provinces, which together have a population of over eight hundred million. About sixty common chemical pollutants often found in food are being monitored. Through the network, the government has already found out how pathogenic bacteria are transmitted through food.

The Ministry says China will steadily improve its food safety standards. More surveys on food will be carried out, and there will be more assessment of food-related hazards.

The Ministry of Health has already issued a number of reports assessing the safety of food, including one focusing on an additive called "tonyred." In addition, the ministry also sent out regular early warnings, alerting the public to the dangers of certain food.

In 2006, the country's food hygiene authorities investigated and prosecuted a number of restaurants and manufacturers that used illegal food ingredients.
