Vegetable prices soared by 7.8 pct in just one week because of heavy rain in parts of the country, the Chinese Government said.

The difficult weather conditions have seen increased costs for storage and transportation of vegetables, leading to soaring prices in the space of seven days from October 8, according to information released by the Department of Information Technology.

The department confirmed that the price index of edible agricultural goods in general rose 0.9% over the week before, with 29 out of 58 targeted commodities costing more in the shops.

In the past year, China has experienced unprecedented inflation, that reached  6.5 pct in August.
