China to See Soft Landing This Year: Economists

   Date:2012-02-14

February 14, Economists believe China will achieve a soft landing in its economy this year given possible monetary easing and stronger domestic consumption.

Pan Xiangdong, chief economist with China Galaxy Securities, said in an interview with the state-run Xinhua news agency on Monday that there is not likely to be any dramatic decline in China's economy this year, and that a soft landing will be achieved as the country's consumption will continue to maintain the momentum of stable and rapid growth.

Huang Lin, an analyst with Dongwu Securities, agreed that consumption will rise at a faster pace this year due to the government's stimulation policies and falling consumer prices.

Meanwhile, at a meeting last week to seek experts’ opinions, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said that the government is paying close attention to the economic situation in January and the first quarter of this year.

"We have to make a proper judgment as early as possible when things happen and take quick action," Wen said, adding that fine-tuning of macro-policies should begin in the first quarter.

Pan said that the country's macroeconomic policies may be relaxed to some extent this year "under the framework of being prudent".
