Smartphone demand lifts output

   Date:2012-03-23

THE huge domestic demand has boosted mobile phone output in China, the industry regulator said yesterday.

In the first two months of this year, the production of mobile phones in China gained 2.7 percent on an annual basis to 157.6 million units, according to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

The domestic demand for smartphones continues to grow, analysts said.

Low-cost Android-run smartphones costing under US$200 were a key growth driver in China, International Data Corp, a US-based IT consulting firm said.

The prices of Windows Phone handsets, which debuted in China on Wednesday, start at 1,000 yuan (US$158), said Microsoft, the system developer.

IDC sees China's share of the global market this year at 20.7 percent, beating the US share of 20.6 percent.
