Flood-prevention works are set for a 600-meter section of the Kai Tak River stretching from Po Kong Village to Tung Kwong Road in Hong Kong, said Chief Engineer Alan Ip of the city's Drainage Services Department on Monday.

At a work-commencement ceremony today, Ip said the project will improve the river's drainage capacity and significantly enhance the area's flood-protection standard.

The very narrow, urbanised and densely populated environment poses serious challenges, Ip said. He noted there were complex arrangements to deal with Choi Hung Road's busy traffic.

The total cost of the project is about 1.6 billion HKD. It will start in October and is expected to be completed in mid-2017.
