INTERNATIONAL schools in Shanghai are included in the city's beefed-up campus security efforts after a rash of bloody campus incidents by intruders crossed the country since March.

The Shanghai Education Commission issued a notice yesterday calling for international schools to strengthen daily patrol and keep good maintenance of their security equipment.

"International schools usually pay great attention to their security work," said Yang Weiren, director of the commission's international cooperation and exchange division.

More than 23,000 foreign students are studying in Shanghai's international kindergartens, primary and secondary schools, after-school classes and international divisions of local schools.

The education commission asked international schools to double-check the qualifications of their security guards just as local schools are doing.

Some after-school classes which rent commercial buildings as classrooms are asked to team up with their property management company to impose tighter security measures.

International schools are also asked to report emergencies to local police and education authorities just as local schools do, according to the notice.

"We will pay visits to some international schools to learn about their security work at the end of this month or at the beginning of next month," Yang said.

The city has identified 500 schools with the busiest traffic flow around their campuses. About 600 traffic police officers and traffic assistants take places at these schools during rush hours every day to help guide traffic and escort students.
