The second runway of Shenzhen Airport was completed and put into use yesterday, which indicated another airport with several runways appeared following Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Chongqing and Kunming Airports.

According to the development plan of the aerial city of Shenzhen Airport, the third runway is planned to be built in the future. By 2035, the passenger throughput of Terminal 3 will reach 4500 man times, which will enable Shenzhen Airport become a world-class airport.

Before the open of the second runway, Shenzhen Airport has created a miracle in the world aviation field with its single runway.

In December 1996, Shenzhen Airport became the fourth largest airport in China. In 2003, the passenger throughput exceeded 10 million man times, which make Shenzhen Airport be listed in the top one hundred airports in the world. In 2007, Shenzhen Airport’s passenger throughput surpassed the 20 million mark.

Last year, Shenzhen Airport’s passenger throughput reached 26,713,000 man times, up by 9.1% over the same period of last year; the cargo and mail handling capacity surpassed 808,800 tons, up by 33.6%, and the aircraft landing and taking off numbers reached 216,900, up by 7%. The analysis of ACI shows, Shenzhen Airport has entered the global top 50 airports list.

Some industrial insider considers Shenzhen Airport has become one of the busiest single-runway airports. The airport terminal and parking bay are increasingly cramped due to the increase of passengers and flights. Therefore, building more runways is necessary for Shenzhen Airport.
