Peninsula Shanghai, a joint venture project involving Hong Kong and Shanghai Hotel Ltd and Australia-based SPG Hotel Ltd, will begin construction work in the forth quarter this year, the Hong Kong company said.

The HK$2.8 billion (US$359 million) mixed-use project will comprise a luxury Peninsula hotel with approximately 250 rooms, high-end retail space and serviced apartments on a 56,000-square-meter site in the Bund area.

The project aims to open in 2009. HSH currently operates seven Peninsula hotels around the world, including one in Beijing.
