The government of India plans to release orders for several million PCs through international bidding, which has not only attracted first-tier branded PC vendors but also PC OEMs including Quanta Computer, Pegatron Technology and Clevo to participate in the competition, according to industry sources.
Quanta, Pegatron and Clevo are aiming to cooperate with local OEMs in India to win the orders as India's government will retain about 50% of its planned orders for domestic OEMs, the sources noted.
As of the end of 2010, the number of PC users in India reached 52 million, representing a 100% increase from 2006, and the market is still growing by a double-digit rate each year, pointed out the sources.
Hewlett-Packard (HP), Lenovo, Dell and Acer are currently the four major PC vendors in India, and Asustek Computer has also geared up its marketing efforts in the market recently.
Additionally, tablet PCs are gaining popularity in India, and Lenovo reportedly plans to start marketing its tablets within three months, the sources indicated.
