Intel is set to invest NT$300 million (US$10.06 million) in Taiwan-based software designer Insyde Software and is expected to acquire about a 8.24% stake in the company, according to sources from PC players.
The sources believe Intel's investments in Insyde is aiming to strengthen its competitiveness in the Android platform since in addition to PC BIOS applications, Insyde has also been developing its own operating system Humanos based on Android.
Insyde, which has announced it will soon release its second-round of unsecured convertible bonds, confirmed that Intel will be the major investor of the project, but since the price of the bond still has not yet decided, the actual pricing will still need to wait until its investor meeting in November.
In the past, Intel had made several investments in Insyde with the total amount reached NT$99.4 million, but the shares were all released in 2007 and 2008. With Intel needing assistance for the Android operating system, Insyde has already been working on expanding its research personnel for Android, the sources added.
