Memory packaging/testing houses see depressed operations in 3Q11

   Date:2011/09/27

Powertech Technology (PTI), Formosa Advanced Technologies (FATC), Walton Advanced Engineering and UTAC-Taiwan, four Taiwan-based providers of memory packaging/testing services, expect their third-quarter business operations to reach the lowest levels in 2011 and will rebound in the fourth quarter.

PTI expects its third-quarter revenues to fall sequentially by about 5%.

FATC expects its August revenues to be the lowest monthly level in 2011 and third-quarter revenues to drop by 10-20% on quarter.

Walton foresees that its capacity utilization rate in the third quarter will slip to 75% but the corresponding revenues will be the same as in the preceding quarter.

Ultrabook will help increase demand for DRAM because there are eight 4Gb DRR3 memory chips directly built onto the motherboard of an Ultrabook PC, UTAC-Taiwan indicated. Therefore, DRAM price may rebound as early as the fourth quarter of 2011 if international vendors, including Taiwan-based Acer and Asustek Computer, succeed in sales promotion of their Ultrabook models, UTAC-Taiwan added.
